Miller 3-Peats in Two Mile; Participation Surpasses 400 Runners for New Record

40 kiddie Runners started the festivities for the 15th annual Moraga 4th of July Fun Run in 2011. As the youngsters were finishing their spin around the parking lot, 435 athletes from ages 6 to 83 prepared for the two-mile and five-mile races.

Bradley Miller continued his tradition and won the two-mile race for the 3rd year in a row in a time of 11:33. Women’s two- mile winner, soon to be freshman at Campo, Mary Orders finished with a time of 13:14.

The five-mile race was won by Harlan Lopez in a time of 27:11. Meanwhile Carrie Verdon won the women’s five-mile with a time of 32:17, now the course record for the 14-18 age group. Verdon was followed closely by Miramonte cross country coach Alison Zamanian (32:20) who shattered the course record for the 40-49 age group.

Another age group record was broken by Maryly Phillips (women’s 70&up) who ran the five-mile in a time of 64:27. John Salemme (men’s 70&up) broke the age group record with a time of 57:27 for the two-mile. Finally, Barbara Robben (women’s 70&up) ran the two-mile in a time of 24:00 breaking the course record.

After the race, many participants headed over to the pancake breakfast and then took part in the Moraga holiday activities at the Commons.

Family Attendance Key in Achieving Record Participation

Despite the warmer than usual start time temperature, 386 runners of all ages took to the two and five miles courses in what has become a Moraga tradition.

Building on this tradition, chip timing (an electronic detection system that accounts for each of the participating athletes independently and provided by Aaron Ford of Ford Timing) was added for the first time this year.

Family members too young for these races chased rabbits (pace setters) from the Campolindo High School Girls Cross Country Team around either a 400m and 800m course.

Most racers retired to the Moraga Commons where they turned in their bib numbers for a free pancake breakfast (provided by the Moraga Youth Involvement Committee), then joined the community sponsored holiday festivities.

All proceeds from this event go to the Cross Country and Track and Field Programs at Campolindo High School.
