LEAGUE CHAMPIONS!
Frosh Soph Squads Cap Ultimate Team Win with Gutsy Relay Performances

It's difficult to find a single defining moment at Tuesday's DFAL Frosh Soph finale. The afternoon began with a thrilling boys' 1600m that saw Garret Holmes (09), Ross Geiger (09) and Michael Brondello (09) lead seven Cougars under the five minute mark with mind blowing personal bests of 4:33, 4:36 and 4:40 respectively.

This was shortly followed by Olivia Warren's (10) sensational 61.9ce for 400m to claim the individual title. Meanwhile, Andrew Wang (10) was busy dominating the hurdle events and sailing to a season best 18-2.75 for runner-up honors in long jump. Not to be out-done, Lauren Lynch (09) topped the field in both horizontal jumps in addition to adding a fine leg to the runner-up 400 Relay team.

Evan Peters (09) won the discus with a giant seven foot improvement while teammate Thomas Walker (09) cracked the century mark to finish fourth. Michelle Dokos (10) joined double throws winner Eva Isaacs (10) on the medal stand with a third place shot put performance! The girls' 200m event was dominated by Carolyn Goldberger (10), while teammate Ketti Salemme (10) earned third place points in the 100m.

For all the individual success however, it was perhaps fitting that each 1600 Relay squad capped the evening in dramatic fashion. First, the girls team, given the option to scratch with the team competition well in hand, chose to to step out on the track one last time. This, in spite of the fact that two members had already run and scored points in all three distance events!

No matter. Warren's 62 second opening leg set the tone. Follwed by Alyssa Huberts (10), Sara Tomas (10) and Lisa Rosenthal (09), this squad demonstrated what it means to be champions. Their courageous effort was a moment of track & field perfection brimming with character.

But the youngsters weren't finished.

For the boys the theme was redemption. Having fallen to the rival Mats in the regular season, the opportunity to close out the title performance against their top seeded 1600 Relay squad was just the thing to make the Cougar comeback legendary.

After legs of 55, 54 and 55 by Max Bayuk (09), Steven Maurer (09) and Michael Lee (09) respectively, their was also something perfect about passing the baton to the early meet hero. In a showdown of mid-distance strength and sprinter speed, Holmes ran shoulder to shoulder with the Matadors' 400m open champion before hitting the home stretch and inching ahead. The lead in the final 80 meters must have changed five times! But once again, character prevailed.

The announcer exclaimed, "52.9!" as the boys squad converged in a melee of high-fives and sweaty hugs.

Is there anything more perfect?
