Varsity Girls Run Away with DFAL Meet Crown, Lock up Third Consecutive League Title; Brumbaugh, Joyce Win

Putting the difficulties of the 2011 regular season behind them, the varsity girls finally hit their groove at Friday's DFAL Championship Finals in Dublin.

Carrie Verdon (12) pulled a train of Cougar harriers through the 1600m race, helping her teammates claim five of the six scoring places and setting the tone for a team performance that epitomized the varsity girls' squad. "Campo's really about the team. It's not individually based. We all work together," the junior distance star told Damin Esper of the Contra Costa Times.

Indeed, the Campolindo team churned out 137 points in the championships, burying league rival Acalanes by 37, and avenging a mid-season defeat at the hands of the Dons. A major contributor on Friday, who sat on the sidelines during that disappointing regular season loss, was Rhea Jayachandran (12). She competed for the first time in over a month, after recovering from a severely sprained ankle.

The lanky junior held on to win a tense triple jump competition with a mark of 33-5.75, just a quarter inch ahead of second place. The victory earned her squad ten points, and turned the tables on the favorite in the event, Acalanes' Katie Barton, who finished third in 33-5.

Meanwhile, field event drama was also unfolding in the discus, where top seeded Margaret Macy (12) found herself trailing the Dons' Briana Wilkinson, who set a personal best in the first round to take an early lead over the field. However, Macy maintained her composure, sending the platter 102 feet on her fifth attempt, and then improved her mark to 104 feet on her final throw to overtake the leader. Her twin sister Jane Macy (12) bolstered the point total with a fourth place finish.

Perhaps no none was more of a team player on Friday than Hadley Swanson (13), who finished her quadruple performance with a second place in the 200m, after winning the high jump and 400m. Swanson had previously earned the long jump title on Wednesday.

Meghan Nelson (11) was also vital, scoring 10 individual points in the hurdle races and leading off both NCS qualifying relay squads.

Sealing up the team victory came full circle, as Verdon toed the line in the 3200m with the evening shadows stretching out and the winds whipping through the Dublin stadium. Having already won the 1600m and 800m races, the Cougar record holder put aside individual glory, and instead, paced her teammate, Juliet Farnan (12), who made a bold move at the half-way point, leaving behind the lone Acalanes' competitor and eventually winning the race. Verdon finished a step behind, then turned to cheer the rest of her teammates as they each crossed the line.

Earning the meet title pulled the girls' into a tie with Acalanes in the final 2011 league standings, and extends the Cougar's consecutive DFAL championship streak to three.

Not to be left out of the post season magic, Griffin Brumbaugh (11) sparked his boys' team to an unlikely run at the meet title with an upset victory in the shot put. On his final throw of the competition, the senior team leader exploded for a two-foot personal best, sending the iron 44-6.

Thomas Joyce (12) helped Campolindo dominate the distance events with a 4:22.83 clocking in the 1600m that ranks 11th all-time in school history.

Finishing 3rd in the 300m hurdles, Darren Brodowy (12) navigated his way over the final flight safely as Las Lomas' Connor Speck tumbled to the track.

Dan Fadelli (12) improved his 100m time to finish 4th while sprint standout Chris Maag qualified for the NCS Tri-Valley Championships in the 400m, 200m and both relays.

In the end, the varsity boys were just four points shy of league leading Dublin.
