Leach Advances to 1600m Finals

After a sizzling 72 second opening split in her 1600m preliminary heat at Friday's CIF trials at Buchanan High School, Brighie Leach (15) settle into 7th place for the middle laps. She completed 1200m in 3:44 before charging home in 71 seconds to pick up 6th place. Her 4:56.61 clocking advanced the state meet veteran to Saturday's finals.

Goltra Closes High School Career with 3200m Best

Using efficient tactics at Saturday's state championship finals, Aidan Goltra (14) split 4:34 at the 1600m mark before battling home in 4:30 to set a new personal best for 8 laps. The 9:04.11 mark was good enough for 11th place in the race and improves the senior star's 3rd all-time mark on the school record board by 2 seconds.

While Goltra enjoyed favorable conditions with a 9:03pm start time, Brighie Leach (15) fought the oppressive heat in addition to the formidable opponents in the final of the girls' 1600m. Leach opened with a 70 second lap while Anna Maxwell of San Lorenzo Valley charged through the 1st 400m in 65.

The ferocious early pace took its toll however, as Maxwell and Great Oak's Destiny Collins tumbled to the track after tangling feet with eventual winner, Sarah Robinson of Gunn with 200m to go.

Leach stayed clear of the pile up to finish 9th in 4:55.46.
