Girls' DMR Shines at Arcadia Invitational

In the invitational section of the 4 x 1600 relay at the prestigious Arcadia Invitational, the Campo boys were propelled to the front of the race by a career effort from Niki Moore (17), who handed the baton over to Edward Buckley (19) after just 4 minutes and 20 seconds.

Buckley battled at the front for 2 laps before being gapped by the leaders. While Moore, Buckley, Richard Gong (17) and Jared Yabu (17) were doing their best to keep pace with the middle of the pack, American Fork of Utah were surging to a new national record of 16:41.30. The Cougars finished 16th in the 30 team race, just missing a sub 18 minute performance.

Isabella Chao (18) had a strong opening half, clocking 5:19 at the 1600m mark, on her way to another sub 11 minute finish in the 3200m.

On Saturday afternoon, the boys' quartet was back on the track for the open section of the distance medley relay. Once again, Moore put the team at the front. Gong took over sprint duties for the group, setting a new 400 split personal best of 54 seconds. Yabu was next in line, shaving almost a second from his 800 split time of 2016. The anchor leg was handled by Buckley, who equaled his 1600m open PR of 4:34.

The boys' total time of 10:43.06 was good enough for 12th place out of the 52 teams competing in the day meet sections.

The final event for the Cougars turned out to be worth the wait as Chao opened the girls' distance medley relay with an all-time effort for 3 laps. Lauren Williams (17) followed with a 61 second 400m leg. Juliet Arnswald (17) kept her squad in the pack before passing the baton to Hannah Ruane (18) for the 1600m anchor leg.

Ruane fought her way back into the top half of the race with a 5:09 split. The team finished in 12:20.64.
