Field event volunteers are responsible for the efficient conduct of their respective events. Field event volunteers are provided with the equipment necessary to conduct the event, including a measuring tape and event score sheet.

Field event volunteers must add athletes' names, along with school affiliation and the division in which they are competing (Frosh Soph Girls, Varsity Girls, Frosh Soph Boys, Varsity Boys) to the score sheet before competition begins.

Field Event Score Sheet:

Long Jump and Triple Jump Time Schedule & Rules:

Long Jump –Starts at beginning of meet (Start of 400m Relay): 3:30pm

Long Jump is conducted for all divisions simultaneously.  Long Jump opens at the beginning of the 400m Relay and closes at the conclusion of the 100m.  Each athlete receives four attempts. Athletes may jump in any order (first come, first served), and should line up on the runway well back of the next competitor.

Triple Jump –Starts at beginning of 800m (Approximately half-way point of running events)

Triple Jump is conducted for all divisions simultaneously.  Triple Jump opens at the beginning of the 800m and closes at the conclusion of the 1600m Relay.  Each athlete receives four attempts. Athletes may jump in any order (first come, first served), and should line up on the runway well back of the next competitor.

A triple jump must start with a jump off of one foot to a landing on the same foot. The athlete must then bound to the opposite foot, from which he or she then must jump into the sand pit.

Long Jump and Triple Jump:

Before a competitor may initiate an attempt, the head event judge must ask the competitor who they are, and from which take off board they intend to take off.

Each athlete receives four attempts. An athlete must initiate an attempt within 1 minute of being called to do so by the head event judge volunteer.

One volunteer should be designated as the head event judge, and should be responsible for determining whether the take off is fair or foul, positioning him or herself next to the appropriate take off board. No part of the shoe may extend over the edge of the take off board/stripe nearest the sand pit. If any part of the shoe extends over the edge of the take off board, the attempt is a foul.

A foul is charged as an attempt and noted on the score sheet with an "F." Foul attempts are NEVER measured!

Another volunteer should be designated as the marker in the sand pit. The marker volunteer must determine the mark made by the athlete that is closest to the take off board. This is the closest impression the athlete makes with any part of his or her body before exiting the sand pit.

When measuring a fair attempt, the "0" mark of the tape measure must be held firmly at the edge of the impression nearest the take off board. The head judge should then hold the other end of the tape on the take off board. Effort must be made to keep the tape untangled and level from the sand impression to the board. In addition, the tape should be moved laterally on the take off board relative to the sand impression so as to insure there is no extra distance added to the mark.

The head event judge should then read the mark aloud and record it on the score sheet. Marks must always be rounded DOWN to the lesser 1/4 inch.

At the completion of completion, the head event judge must determine best marks for each competitor (circle on score sheet). In the event of a tie between best marks, the next best mark by the tied competitors will be used to break the tie. Then the head event judge must indicate final placing of all competitors on the score sheet and deliver it to the score keepers' table near the finish line.

Shot Put and Discus Time Schedule & Rules:

Shot Put –Girls First, starting at beginning of meet (Start of 400m Relay): 3:30pm

Frosh Soph and Varsity Girls' divisions are conducted together, beginning at the start of the 400m Relay.  Each athlete receives four attempts.

Frosh Soph and Varsity Boys' divisions are conducted together immediately following the conclusion of the girls' competition. Each athlete receives four attempts.

Frosh Soph and Varsity girls must use a 4 kilogram shot. Frosh Soph boys must use a 10 lbs. shot. Varsity boys must use a 12 lbs. shot. Failure to use a correctly weighted implement shall result in disqualification from the event.

Measurements in shot put must be reported to the nearest lesser 1/4 inch.

Discus –Boys First, starting at beginning of meet (Start of 400m Relay): 3:30pm

Frosh Soph and Varsity Boys' divisions are conducted together, beginning at the start of the 400m Relay.  Each athlete receives four attempts.

Frosh Soph and Varsity Girls' divisions are conducted together immediately following the conclusion of the boys' competition. Each athlete receives four attempts.

Frosh Soph and Varsity girls must use a 1 kilogram disc. Frosh Soph and Varsity boys must use a 1.6 kilogram disc. Failure to use a correctly weighted implement shall result in disqualification from the event.

Measurements in discus must be reported to the nearest lesser whole inch.

Shot Put and Discus:

Each athlete receives three attempts. An athlete must initiate an attempt within 1 minute of being called to do so by the head event judge volunteer.

Taping any part of the throwing hand shall not be permitted unless there is an open wound. Gloves are not permitted. Taping of the wrist is permissible.

Typically, the head event judge calls the competitors in the order their names appear on the score sheet; however, at the discretion of the judge, athletes may compete in any order. For instance, athletes competing in concurrent events, may ask to take more than one attempt in succession, or to take a second and third attempt between the first attempts of other athletes.

One volunteer should be designated as the head event judge, and should be responsible for determining whether the attempt is fair or foul, positioning him or herself next to the throwing ring. A throw must begin from a stationary position with both feet inside the ring.

It is a foul if the competitor...
–Fails to initiate an attempt within 1 minute of being called to do so.
–After stepping into the ring, fails to pause before starting the throw.
–After starting the attempt, touches any surface outside the ring during a throw.
–Throws an implement which hits the cage and/or any object outside the sector before landing in the sector.
–Is not under control before exiting the back half of the ring.
–Leaves the ring before the implement has landed and judge calls "Mark."
–Does not exit the back half of the ring.

Specific to shot put:
It is a foul if the competitor...
–Allows the shot to drop behind or below the shoulder during the put attempt.
–Touches the top or end of the stop board before the put is marked.

A foul is charged as an attempt and noted on the score sheet with an "F." Foul attempts are NEVER measured!

Another volunteer should be designated as the marker in the sector. The marker volunteer must determine the first mark made by the implement when it lands within the sector.

When measuring a fair attempt, the "0" mark of the tape measure must be held firmly by the marker at the edge of the landing impression nearest the ring. The head judge should then hold the other end of the tape in the center of the ring. Effort must be made to keep the tape untangled and level. The measurement should then be taken at the point the tape meets the edge of the ring.

The head event judge should then read the mark aloud and record it on the score sheet.

At the completion of competition, the head event judge must determine best marks for each competitor (circle on score sheet). In the event of a tie between best marks, the next best mark by the tied competitors will be used to break the tie. Then the head event judge must indicate final placing of all competitors on the score sheet and deliver it to the score keepers' table near the finish line.
