DFAL
Center Meet #2 RESULTS AT BOTTOM OF PAGE
Smit Roars to Career Best, Helps FSG to 5-1 Record; Cougars Sweep Five Divisions to Dominate Lone Center Meet With the first of two regular season center meets having been "rained out" earlier in the month, Wednesday's convergence of the DFAL's teams on the Shadow Cliffs course became the only contest that would sort out the contenders before the ultimate showdown at the League Championships on November 5th. As it turned out, the Cougars seemed unfazed by the pressure of a single contest format. The Campolindo teams walked away with a combined record of 35-1 for 2011: The single blemish at the hands of a talented Las Lomas frosh soph girls squad. Nevertheless, the Campo youngsters had something to celebrate, as they overcame the absence of key scorers and kept their team in contention for a league title. Jenny Smit (14) was one of a handful of athletes that stepped up to fill the void with a lifetime best performance. Smit finished 2nd for the team, and 7th overall, behind the front running prowess of Ellen Hann (14) to keep her squad in contention. A top ten performance from Erika Wolfran (15) also helped the youngsters, as they held off challenges from Miramonte and Acalanes. With a regular season record of 5-1, the girls are still in the hunt for a DFAL title! Meanwhile, the varsity and junior varsity girls kept their streaks alive with sweeps of their respective divisions. Carrie Verdon (12), in spite of a freak nose fracture at Monday's practice, ran away from the field early in the varsity race. Rachel Johnson (15) and Mary Orders (15) crossed the line 3rd and 4th respectively to close the door on a tough Acalanes team. On the boys' side the meet kicked off with a redemption for the frosh soph squad. The return of Ben Weinberg (14) and Will Moran (14), who each finished in the top seven, along with the individual win of Michael Peterson (15), helped propel their team to a lopsided win over last year's league champs from Las Lomas. The junior varsity boys nearly scored a perfect 15-50 against the entire league, as they claimed seven of the first eight places. Cameron Sun (13) earned the individual win while Gryphon Goodrich (13) posted his best performance to date in finishing 6th overall. The most exciting race of the day may have been the varsity boys' competition, with a highly touted Miramonte squad looking tough early. However, with a second half surge by Vinson Compestine (12) and Keith Geiger (12), as well as the return of Daniel Johnson (12) in the #5 position, the Cougars finished the day unscathed.
