Cougars Win Five Team Titles at DFAL Championships Thomas Joyce (12) capped his four years of DFAL competition with a second consecutive individual league title, finishing the Hidden Valley Park course in school record time at Saturday's championships. The poised veteran used a surge at the 2k mark to break his closest challenger, then continued to gap the field through the finish. Joyce's final time of 15:41 break's the school record mark set by Robert Pulford in 2008. Supporting Joyce, in 2nd and 4th place respectively, Vinson Compestine (12) and Keith Geiger (12) also cracked the 16 minute mark, helping earn Campolindo's fourth consecutive varsity boys' team crown. The effort also moved the squad to the top of the course record board as their 80:28 team time was four seconds faster than the mark set by the Cougars of 2008. Minutes earlier, in the cool but breezy conditions under overcast skies, Carrie Verdon (12) won the varsity girls' race in a jaw dropping 17:30, crushing her own course record by 21 seconds. Verdon's mark is 30 seconds faster than the #2 time ever run on the 23-year-old course. Verdon, a national sensation, sprung from the lead pack after 600m and never looked back. Her teammates Megan McMillan (13) and Rachel Johnson (15) finished under 19:00 to land the 3rd and 4th spots on the all-time Campolindo course record list, and propel their squad to a sixth consecutive title. The Cougar's 94:11 team time also eclipsed the course record, set by last year's state titlests, by five seconds. Michael Peterson (15) won the frosh soph boys' individual honors while Diana Kossakowski (13) used a late charge to overtake teammate Brooke Martini (12) for the junior varsity girls' win. Isaac Valverde (14) finished second in the frosh soph boys race, improving his time over last season by nearly two minutes! Ben Weinberg (14), Will Moran (14) and Cole Whitley (14) also knocked more than a minute off their 2010 championship performance. Perhaps most impressive however, Nick Hughes (15) dropped 4:05 from his previous season best! For the girls, Nadia Aquil (15) saved her best for last, shattering her previous two mile mark by almost nine minutes, finishing in 17:01 to take 57th place in the frosh soph girls' division. In all, the red and blue harriers managed to equal their championship title total of 2010, winning all but the frosh soph girls' crown.
Cross country roundup: Campolindo's Carrie Verdon dominates DFAL meet By Phil Jensen Campolindo's Carrie Verdon made her last race on the Hidden Valley Park-Martinez 2.95-mile course a memorable one. Verdon smashed her own course record while winning her fourth Diablo Foothill Athletic League girls championship individual title. All four of her league championship victories have been on the Hidden Valley Park course. "It was attack the course and run mentally strong," said Verdon about her race. "I just knew I had to run fast." Verdon, who has orally committed to Colorado, already had a six-second lead over second place near the 1,200-meter mark. That gap widened to 12 seconds by the mile mark, which Verdon passed in 5:42. She finished with a time of 17:30.5, well ahead of her old course record of 17:51.4 set at last year's DFAL championships. Acalanes' Annie Marggraff was second Saturday with a time of 18:31.6. Campolindo's Thomas Joyce defended his individual title in the boys race with a time of 15:40.6. Joyce and Miramonte's Jamie Fehrnstrom passed through the one-mile mark together in 5:08 before Joyce pulled away. Teammate Vinson Compestine used a strong kick to finish second in 15:52.4. "At the 800 mark, that's when the race really started. That's when I went faster than my intended race pace," Joyce said. "The plan was almost exactly the same as last year." Both the Campolindo boys and girls squads defended their league championship team titles. The Cougar girls had a score of 24, and the boys' score was 31.
