Boys Roll over Stanford Field with Career Best from Geiger; Verdon Sets Top Time

Keith Geiger (12) finished the 5k course on the Stanford links in 15:56 to land 11th place in the 203 athlete Division III field at Saturday's national caliber invitational. The mark was 48 seconds faster than his 2010 Stanford Invite effort, and good enough for the third spot on the varsity boys' squad.

Along with front running from fifth place finisher Thomas Joyce (12), and a solid top ten performance from Vinson Compestine (12), Geiger's career best helped the Cougars outrun the rest of the teams in the DIII race. In fact, their 29 second pack margin held up against all 169 squads on the day, making a strong case for the Campo harriers state meet podium aspirations.

Leland Wong (12) just missed the sixteen minute mark, crossing the line in 16:01 to finish in 13th place, and fourth for the team.

Moments later, Carrie Verdon (12) tore through the well worn course in the final race of the day. Accompanied for much of the five kilometers by Oakmont's Katie Garcia, the senior standout used a controlled acceleration over the final 400m to seal the win, and set the fastest time of the day across all divisions. In fact, the 16:59 mark is also the fastest in the history of the course.

Verdon's historic performance was backed up by a trio of varsity newcomers: Rachel Johnson (15), who showed she wasn't afraid of the big stage, taking over the number two spot for the squad in her first ever varsity race, along with Megan McMillan (13) and Mary Orders (15), who also finished among the top fifteen.

Veteran Rachel Meadows (12) set a new course best in 19:09 to complete the scoring for the squad.
