Gelston Rules Annual Orienteering Race; Verdon Leads Savvy Veteran Girls Field

Combining mega-mind navigation with fine aerobic effort, Kevin Gelston (12) out-played the field to win the 2011 Orienteering Championships on Saturday at Hidden Valley Park. Gelston kept his wits working, and his feet dry, as he managed to locate each of the twelve "control points" and return to the start/finish in less than forty minutes, easily outrunning the rest of the veteran boys contenders.

Also thinking on her feet, Carrie Verdon (12) topped the veteran girls' division with a ferocious pace, as well as a little misdirection of her opponents. Rumor has it Verdon is not one for giving reliable directions. Nevertheless, Merinda Zywicz (13) and Sarah Orders (13) managed to give Verdon a good run, finishing second and third, respectively.

Rookie winners Jessie Thompson (13) and Nick LoPresti (13) showed they've been paying attention, navigating the tricky terrain ahead of the rest of the newcomers.
