Cougars Sweep Individual Crowns, Win Five of Six Team Titles at Championships Riley Felt (17), Jared Yabu (17), Haley Shipway (14), Chris Garvey (14), Brighie Leach (15) and Aidan Goltra (14) each contributed to a reoccurring theme at Saturday's DFAL Championships on the Shadow Cliffs course. Each claimed a dominant victory in their respective races, helping the Cougars sweep the individual titles. Campolindo nearly pulled off the same feat in the team competition, earning wins in all but the junior varsity girls division. Yet, that team's performance was hardly one for which to hang heads, as they put together the fastest junior varsity team time on the course in school history. Behind Shipway's convincing individual win, 40 seconds ahead of runner up Tessa Hanson of Miramonte, was a string of personal bests. Liz Timmons (16) improved her mark to finish 5th while Tori Oto (14) capped her high school career with a 21 second best. Nadia Aquil (15) and Fine Gumpert (16) rounded out the scoring five, lowering their course records by 18 and 14 seconds, respectively. The frosh soph girls' squad earned the first team title of the day, using an impressively narrow spread between the front five. In addition to Felt, Ann Cherayil (17), Claire Cimino (17), Amalia Riegelhuth (17) and Erika Riepe (17) each claimed "All-League" distinction, finishing within the top 10. Their 23 points held off a talented Las Lomas squad that finished 2nd, just 12 points back. The frosh soph boys enjoyed a front running tandem as Jonathan Semenza (16) finished on the heels of Yabu. Along with a spectacular closing half mile from Miguel Baliwag (16), who nabbed 4th place, Yabu and Semenza gave the Cougars an insurmountably low 7 point score for their first 3 finishers. One of the heroic efforts of the day came from Gabriel Valverde-Turner (17), who picked himself up off the ground after a violent tumble at the mile mark to finish in the top 10, blood covered knee and all. Richard Gong (17) sealed the win with a 12th place finish. Top improvements in the frosh soph boys' race came from Raymond Diaz (17) and Stone Mao (17), who dropped 22 and 18 seconds, respectively, from their previous bests. The final 1.9 mile race of the day saw the junior varsity boys tested more than they've been in several years. Nevertheless, All-League performances from Omid Boozarpour (14), Tyler Takata (14) and Tyrone Yanaga (14), combined with Garvey's victory, allowed the squad to push their unprecedented league championship winning streak to seven years. Cameron Atwood (16) topped the 17 Cougar improvements in the junior varsity boys race, knocking 25 seconds off his previous course result. Climbing to the top of the all-time school record list for the Shadow Cliffs 2.95 mile course, Brighie Leach (15) surged away from all contenders in the final mile of the varsity girls' race, cruising into the finish for the win. The effort, in training shoes, eclipsed her previous course record by 51 seconds. The varsity girls flexed their muscle, placing all five scorers in the top 10. Mary Orders (15) took over the number two position with a 4th place finish in 18:18. The mark moves her to 4th on the All-Time list. Sarah Cella (16) was 5th, Rachel Johnson (15) 7th, and Robin Powell (17) crossed the line in 9th to wrap up the scoring. The girls' 21 point total was half the score of second place, and put an emphatic exclamation point on their reclamation of the league crown. In the varsity boys' contest, Goltra hammered out a 14:49 clocking, the third fastest in course history. He was supported by All-League efforts from Ben Weinberg (14) in 6th, Parker Lothamer (15) in 8th, and Nathaniel Sauerberg (16) in 10th. Kevin Buckley (15) also earned All-League honors with a 13th place finish. The varsity boys' team score of 38 out-distanced Miramonte's second place total by 20 points. The victory is Campolindo's sixth consecutive league championship win. CHECK OUT SHUTTERFLY ALBUM #1 HERE! CHECK OUT SHUTTERFLY ALBUM #2 HERE!
Cross country: Goltra, Leach claim DFAL titles PLEASANTON -- Campolindo's Brighie Leach successfully defended her Diablo Foothill Athletic League championship girls cross country title Saturday in a very different situation from last year. Leach won the 2012 race by .02 of a second when she kicked past two competitors in the last 15 meters of the race to win. On Saturday, the junior made a move on a flat portion of the second mile and won by nearly 18 seconds with a time of 17:33.9 for the 2.95 mile course at Shadow Cliffs Regional Recreation Area. Las Lomas' Chloe Hansel was second (17:51.7). "I just decided to go," said Leach about her decision to make a move at that point of the race. "Chloe is very good at hills." Campolindo's Aidan Goltra also was able to get separation from second-place Cameron Gaskell of Acalanes near the middle of the boys race. Goltra proceeded to win by almost 28 seconds with a time of 14:48.7, which was announced as the third-fastest time in course history. Gaskell, a sophomore, was second in 15:16.6. "I just wanted to go out, feel relaxed and stay controlled throughout the whole race," said Goltra, who is the defending California Interscholastic Federation Division III state champion. "I was pressing the whole time ... but it was a controlled race." Campolindo also won both team titles and clinched overall DFAL titles. The girls squad placed five in the first nine for an excellent score of 21. The boys team had four in the top 10 on their way to a score of 38. It was the sixth straight league championship meet title for the Cougars boys team.
