Finnane 5th at Footlocker West, Qualifies for National Championships in San Diego

Finishing 5th against the best runners in the 11 western states, Toni Finnane (15) became just the 2nd runner in Campolindo history to qualify for the Footlocker National Championships, to be held on December 13 in San Diego's Balboa Park.

The Footlocker Western Regional field included athletes from California, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Montana, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Alaska and Hawaii.

Both Finnane and teammate Brighie Leach (15) found good positions in the top 20 runners through the 1st mile of the Mt. San Antonio College 5k course. Then, up the first climb, the duo began picking up places. By the half-way point in the race, Finnane was 7th and Leach 9th.

Finnane continued to gain ground in the final mile, using the long climb up reservior hill to pass 2 more competitors before holding on through the finish.

Though she again experienced breathing difficulties in the later stages of the race, Leach maintained a better pace than the previous week and finished under 20 minutes.

Finnanes' 18:14 clocking for the course was 8 seconds faster than Carrie Verdon's 5th place performance in 2010.

Clouds Break, Finnane Flies at Footlocker National Championships

Toni Finnane (15) finished her first and final high school cross country season as an All-American by competing in the Footlocker National Championships at San Diego's Balboa Park on Saturday, December 13.

The all expenses paid trip began on Thursday morning, checking into the Hotel del Coronado as the best runners in the country converged for the most competitive prep cross country race in the world. In spite of raining weather, athletes enjoyed a course preview on Friday, jogging with Olympians like Molly Huddle, Meb Keflezighi, Ryan Hall, and Adam Goucher. That was followed by a special screening of Disney's upcoming film, McFarland, staring Kevin Costner.

In Saturday's race, the sun finally broke through the clouds, and Finnane battled through the later stages of the course to finish a remarkable 22nd out the top 40 distance runners in the nation. The weekend was then concluded with an extravagant awards ceremony!
