Varsity Boys Topple Division Rival to Win Stanford Invite; Ruane 5th in Girls' Race

With 5 finishers in the top 16 and all 7 in the top 60, the varsity boy’s squad went “all in” at the 2015 edition of the Stanford Invitational. Using a conservative start, the trio of Jonathan Semenza (16), Richard Gong (17), and Ray Diaz (17) surged through the middle mile of the race as they efficiently picked off competitors, with all three eventually landing in the top 20 in the division III race.

Semenza in particular finished hard, nabbing 10th place, right in front Nathaniel Sauerberg (16) to give the cougars a deadly pack margin of 8 seconds between their #2 and #5 scorers. This performance, coupled with another superb effort from frontrunner Jared Yabu (17), helped the boys scrape out a 6 point victory over highly touted Paso Robles.

Miguel Baliwag (16) and Kyle Flett (17) also closed well, finishing as the best 6th man and the best 7th man in the entire 32 team field.

The combined effort held up over the course of the day as the Cougars ended up 6th overall in a merge of all races.

Hannah Ruane (18) and Hana Sun (16) continued their front running prowess, with the duo finishing in the top 10 in the division III race.

Ruane closed out the final mile of the spongy 5k course to finish 5th, establishing a new personal best of 18:26, a massive improvement of 1:22 over her mark of a year ago. Likewise, Sun also established a new best, with her 18:44 good enough for 6th place.

Isabella Chao (18) continued her steady improvement to finish 3rd for the squad in 20th place overall. Varsity newcomer Savannah Hilton (18) ran like a seasoned veteran to grab 35th place, just ahead of Emma Ishida (16). With a score of 92 points, the cougars managed a 2nd place finish behind CCS power Aptos.
