Ruane, Chao Earn Top Tandem Times at Stanford Invite; Boys Win on Tie-Breaker

Eclipsing the 2014 performances of Brighie Leach (15) and Toni Finnane (15), the latest Campolindo dynamic duo used favorable conditions at the 2016 the Stanford Invitational to set the best 1-2 performance of the day and climb to 2nd and 3rd All-Time on the Cougar course record board, behind 2-time state champion Carrie Verdon (12).

Hannah Ruane (18) and Isabella Chao (18) positioned themselves in the lead pack of the division 3 race from the gun. Just before the mile mark, Live Oak's Kaylah Grant surged ahead, eventually building a lead of 30 meters. Ruane and Chao stayed poised, and slowly recovered the distance. With just over a mile to the finish, Ruane took the lead. Shortly thereafter, Chao also passed the fading Grant and held close to her teammate for the remainder of the race.

Chao's time of 17:40 was 11th fastest overall and the best of any #2 runner at the meet. It was also an astounding 2:07 improvement over her time from the same meet in 2015.

The girls' team, which included the 5k debut of Maddie House (20), Sarah Naughten (20) and Kira D'Iorio (19), managed a 4th place finish.

The boys' squad was again led by 4-year varsity veteran Jared Yabu (17), who appears to be making progress after a 2-week bout of ankle issues. The senior was just 4 seconds off his 2015 mark, finishing in 15:40 to claim the 5th place in the division 3 race.

Ray Diaz (17) also cracked the top 10 in 15:55, a 21 second improvement.

Making a substantial jump from his DAL center meet performance of just 2 days prior, Niki Moore (17) helped tighten up the Cougar pack with a 16:16 finish, 7 seconds behind #3 man Richard Gong (17).

Also improving over his center meet effort was Edward Buckley (19), who moved up to the #5 spot with a time of 16:42.

The boys' team once again faced off against state rival Paso Robles, squeaking out a victory by virtue of Andrew Tseng's (18) 40th place finish, 10 places ahead of the Bearcat's 6th man.
