Subramaniam Earns Grand Prize with 29-Second Improvement over Seed Time By all accounts, Saturday's annual team time trial was the most successful in the history of the event with 55 of the 67 competitors bettering their seed times for the 1600m distance. Topping the list of vast improvements was Adithi Subramaniam (19), who won her heat in 6:13.51, a whopping 29 seconds faster than her target mark. In the final straight, Subramaniam overtook Elle Esquer (20), who was finishing her own remarkable performance. Esquer used an aggressive start to knock 20 seconds off her predicted time, finishing in 6:14.86. The 2nd best improvement of the day came from Catherine Zhang (20). The hard-working freshman was entered at 6:52, but managed to win her heat in 6:26.96. Other impressive victories included a 5:16.10 performance from Will Gipson (17), who outdistance the nearest competitor in his race by 5 seconds with a nifty final sprint. The first sub-5 minute effort was turned in by Dylan Hoover (17) as he edged out Pablo Nguyen (20) and Derek He (18) who also dropped under the coveted standard. In the same heat, Hannah Ruane (18) and Isabella Chao (18) continued their remarkable season with times of 5:00.49 and 5:00.98, respectively. The fastest heat of the day also proved to be the closest finish. Half-mile ace Niki Moore (17) defied conventional wisdom and took the lead from the gun with 2-mile specialists Jared Yabu (17), Ray Diaz (17) and Richard Gong (17) in tow. The group was still tightly bunched at the half-way point as Kyle Flett (17) surged into contention. On the backstretch of lap 3 Yabu pulled ahead but could not shake off Moore and Diaz. At the bell that trio was still clustered with Gong just a step behind. With 200m remaining, Yabu again surged to the lead, but again, Moore responded. The two separated from Diaz and Gong and battled through the final straight. At the line it was unclear to the naked eye who had taken the victory. Apparent however, was that the race produced exceptional times across the board, with 2 athletes under 4:30 and another 2 just over that mark. The final outcome was determined by the electronic timing system: Moore had edged out Yabu, 4:27.82 to 4:27.85!
