JV Boys' Avenge Early-Season Setback; Cougars Sweep Final DAL Center Meet

Taking the top 6 individual finishing places, the junior varsity boys' squad rebounded from its early season loss to Acalanes with a dominating sweep of league opponents at Wednesday's DAL Center Meet at Newhall Park. In fact, all 6 Campolindo teams managed to finish the season with an undefeated afternoon.

The frosh soph boys provided the spark, thrashing their fellow youngsters in the 1st race of the day. Dylan Gunn (21) paced teammates Sam Smith (22) and Fin Jordan (22) to impressive sub-10:30 marks on the 1.95 mile course. Gunn ultimate won the individual frosh soph battle with Smith and Jordan finishing 2nd and 3rd, respectively.

Alan Pierrat (21) and Alec Driver (21) both improved by over 2 minutes in the frosh soph boys' race.

In the frosh soph girls' competition that followed, Sarah Berten (22) and Haelee Chung (22) provided the front running while Jessica Rosiak (21) and Sophia Harju (22) offered critical support. All 4 athletes finished in the top 10. The final scoring slot was filled by a hard-charging Julia Rane (22), who cross the finish line in 14:21, the fastest of any 5th scorer in the league.

Mia Travis (20) toed the line for the 1st time in a month to rescue the junior varsity girls' squad. Finishing 4th overall, the 3-year veteran helped the team edge ahead of league-leading Northgate in the dual scoring. The victory ensures a showdown between the 2 contenders for the league title at next Saturday's DAL championships.

The biggest improvement of the day came from Katie Strohmeyer, who finished 33rd in the junior varsity girls' race with a whopping 2:56 improvement over her time on the course from 2017.

As the shadows lengthened across the gravel trails, Edward Buckley (19) and Las Lomas' Preston Norris surged away from the rest of the varsity boys' field. When they broke from the trees at the top of the lone hill on the course, Norris maintained a slight advantage. Through the 2nd mile Buckley closed down the gap to the leader, and as they entered the final mile, the Campolindo senior moved to the front.

Also picking up places in the late stages of the race, Cayden Hein (20) and Dylan Cronin (20) countered an early bid by College Park's top tandem.

Buckley, Hein and Cronin would all finish in the top 5 while Cameron Iniguez-Reyes (19) showed consistency filling the 4th scoring position in 8th place. In all, the Cougars placed 6 finishers in front of the Falcons' 4th man.

The afternoon was closed out with a gritty victory for the varsity girls. Bolstered by the 1-2 punch of Paloma Hancock (20) and Alicia Hober (20) who finished 4th and 5th, and a clutch effort from Bianca Pierrat (20), who managed to stay ahead of every other teams' 5th scorer, the defending league champions held off a stiff challenge from Miramonte.
