Boone's PR Sparks Frosh Soph Rebound; Cougars Sweep Team Titles at League Meet With a hard-charging 2nd mile, Carson Boone (23) surged through the frosh soph boys' field at Saturday's Diablo Athletic League championship meet at Hidden Valley Park, en route to a 15th place finish. The performance eclipsed his previous course best by 1 minute and 9 seconds, and bettered his position versus the rest of the league by 28 places. The freshman had finished 43rd at the 2nd DAL center meet of the season just 10 days prior. The clutch effort helped Boone's squad claim the league championship title with a score of 35, well ahead of their nearest rivals Northgate and College park. It was the 1st time all season that Boone had finished among the frosh soph boys' scoring front 5. Sam Smith (22) was the frosh soph boys' top finisher, winning the individual title with a time of 11:15. Teammate Finn Jordan (22) earned a runner-up medal in 11:28 while Blake Webster (23) and Hardesty Dolge (22) provided heroic efforts of their own, finishing with new personal bests for the course in 6th and 11th place, respectively. The most improved athlete of the entire day for Campolindo was also a finisher in the frosh soph boys' division: Kevin Ma (23) landed the 158th place, running 3 minutes and 38 seconds faster than his mark from the 1st center meet of the season. The magic started for the Cougars in the 1st race of the day; Quinn Guthrie (23), Bryn Hober (23) and Angeni Lieben (22) swept the top-3 individual places of the frosh soph girls' division. The up-front fire power, combined with an inspired 37-second improvement from Sophia Harju (22) and a 9th place finish from Haelee Chung (22), gave the squad a jaw-dropping 80-point margin of victory over 2nd place College Park. Laurel Hunter (22) contiued her rise up the depth chart, lowering her Hidden Valley Park 2-mile best by nearly a minute. The most improved performance for the girls' team came in the junior varsity race, where Katie Strohmeyer (21) turned in the effort of her career, finishing 11th overall and 1 minute and 24 seconds ahead of her previous course record. Mia Travis (20) was the junior varsity girls' race winner, breaking the tape in 13:51. She was followed closely by Sydney Roberts (21) and Gracie Woidat (21), who claimed the next 2 places. Sarah Naughten (20) and Jessica Rosiak (21) joined them as all-league winners with 5th and 6th place finishes, respectively. Their 17-point total tally is the lowest score ever recorded by a Campolindo junior varsity girls' squad at the league championships, and turned out to be 1-point better than the score posted by their counterparts in the junior varsity boys' division. The junior varsity boys were led to their 13th consecutive DAL team title by race winner Vishal Lashkari (21), who cranked out a 19-second course record improvement. Lashkari was joined in the top 10 by 6 of his teammates, including runner-up Arik Nashan (21). Jerry Xu (23) showed the most progress on the course, lowering his time by 42 seconds to wrap up his rookie season. Both varsity teams enjoyed dominant wins over the rest of the league in spite of missing key scorers in their lineups. The girls' backed up a strong opening mile with mid-race grit. While eventual race winner Audrey Allen of Miramonte gradually pulled away from the field, Paloma Hancock (20) and Ellie Buckley (23) traded places in the chase pack with College Park and Las Lomas' top guns. Emma Smith (20) and Alicia Hober (20) hung tough to earn all-league 1st-team honors while freshman Zoe Theulier (23) closed well to finish 13th. The varsity boy's enjoyed a modest pace through the 2-mile mark. All 7 of the Cougar scorers were still among the top 12 as the pack traversed Jack Rabbit Loop. It was Dylan Gunn (21) who opened things up in the final mile, surging to a 30-meter lead over teammate Alex Lodewick (23) by the time he hit the base of Finale Hill. Gunn held on for a commanding win while Lodewick pulled away from the rest of the field to finish 2nd. Senior rookie Dylan Mitchley (20) took over the #3 position for the squad, crossing the line in 6th place. All told, the Cougars claimed 5 of 6 individual crowns along with a sweep of the team titles.
