Ed Sias Invitational RESULTS AT BOTTOM OF PAGE
Vets Post All-Time Marks at ESI Meet; Collins, Silverman Show Huge Progress With the week-long heat wave finally breaking, Saturday's Ed Sias Invitational proved to be a successful kickoff to the high school cross country season for the Cougars. Though warm and moderately humid, after consecutive training days peaking well over 100 degrees leading up to the meet, the cloud cover brought welcome relief and an opportunity for top veterans to pursue all-time performances. In the small-school varsity boys' division, Alex Lodewick (23) used a mid-race surge to gap the rest of the field en route to a winning time of 10:05, which eclipses the 10:07 school-record mark set by Chris Viscaino in 2004. Also under the 11-minute barrier, Connor McGhee (23) finished 5th to help his squad hold off a challenge from St. Ignatius for the team title. The girls' Hidden Valley Park 2-mile school record also changed hands on Saturday as Shea Volkmer (24) moved ahead of teammate Ellie Buckley (23) in the final stages of the race to win the small-school varsity girls' division in 11:57. Her time is 9-seconds faster than the previous Campolindo best established by Toni Finnane in 2014. In addition to Volkmer and Buckley up front, the varsity girls' showed strength in numbers with Makena Weberski (24), Daisy Penney (24), Caroline McCool (23), and Kate Kabenina (24) securing the 5-6-7-8 scoring positions in the race. Their team score of 18 points is also a meet record. While the veterans enjoyed a banner day, including a junior varsity girls' individual win from Quinn Guthrie (23), the Campolindo newcomers also showed readiness to carry on the Cougar distance-running tradition. Freshman sensation Anya Houston (26) bounded away from her nearest competition to win the frosh soph girls' division by 40 seconds. With a supporting cast that included Carina Trento (26) and Libby Wong (26), Houston's frosh soph squad took home the meet title. Other freshmen improving over their previous 2-mile bests included Bobby Silverman (26), who knocked nearly 90 seconds from his practice meet result to finish 25th in the frosh boys' race. The biggest gain over the week was turned in by Maddie Collins (26), who dropped her time by 2 minutes and 8 seconds to snag 16th place in the FS/JV Combined Race, wrapping up an outstanding day for the host school.
