Varsity Girls' Comes Down to Wire; Epic Battle Decided by Clutch Performances as Cougars End Acalanes' Streak In one for the ages, the Campolindo girls' varsity squad clawed their way to victory at yesterday's final DFAL regular season match up. The undefeated Dons of Acalanes, with league leading performers in hurdles, sprints, jumps and distance, came within four points of dashing the Cougars' hopes for a league title repeat. Rhea Jayachandran (12) and Meghan Nelson (11) were among the top performers of the meet, each competing in four events. The two stars earned fourteen points between them, all in high pressure, highly competitive events! None were more fraught with tension than the triple jump, where Jayachandran achieved an unexpected two and a half foot personal best to steal second place, just moments after twisting her ankle in the 300 hurdles. Nelson did her part with runner up finishes in the hurdles, and a third place point in the 400m. Carrie Verdon (12) traded the lead with sub five minute miler Emily Shearer before surging to the tape for a win by seven one-hundreths of a second. Gabby Gryko (13) and Gail Wilson (12) came up big in their first varsity outing, earning valuable jump and vault points, while Margaret Macy (12) improved her discus mark by nearly ten feet to nab second place. The win was sealed by Eva Isaacs' (10) discus victory as the Cougar distance crew, paced by Sarah Orders (13) and Grace Orders (11), orchestrated a vital sweep of the 3200m. The varsity girls' performance was matched by the rest of the squad as the frosh soph girls, frosh soph boys and varsity boys each out scored their opponents.
