Verdon Takes Two Titles; Cougars Qualify Seventeen for NCS Meet of Champions

With the familiar winds of the Granada High School stadium battering runners on the home stretch, conditions were less than ideal on Saturday for the athletes of the NCS Tri-Valley Area leagues looking to qualify to next weekend's Meet of Champions. Nevertheless, Carrie Verdon (12) looked to make a statement in her 1600m heat, taking an early lead with a 72 second opening split, then building a gap on second place that reached over 100 meters by the time the section's distance running sensation powered into the breeze on the final stretch. Verdon's finish in 4:55.66 was the top time of the day by fifteen seconds, the second fastest time in school history, and leads the entire North Coast Section.

Following Verdon's lead, the Cougars earned an additional sixteen tickets for the NCS MOC, where finalists will compete for a berth in the 2011 California State Championships. Other qualifiers included a pack of distance runners in the 1600m, where Juliet Farnan (12), Sara Mostatabi (11), Haley Shipway (14), and Rachel Meadows (12) took four of the next six places behind Verdon's title effort.

Hadley Swanson (13) claimed three spots for herself with a second place finish in the long jump, a tie for third place in the high jump, and an at-large qualifying mark in the 400m.

The surprise performance of the day was perhaps the fourth place finish in discus by Jane Macy (12), who set a new personal best at 102-2 and leapfrogged her sister Margaret, who finished in sixth.

In the boys' 3200m, Thomas Joyce (12) returned to the track after finishing fourth in the 1600m to advance in fifth position. Teammates Vinson Compestine (12) and Dylan Laucher (11) also clung to the breakaway pack through eight grueling laps, grabbing the final two qualifying sports.

Verdon finished up her day with a victory in the girls' 3200m, while Farnan finished 7th to also advance.
