Four Athletes Shake up All-Time Lists; Verdon Runs away with Distance Double

Hadley Swanson (13) began this past weekend's assault on the Cougar all-time list with her 400m personal best to finish 11th overall at Friday's North Coast Section Meet of Champions trials in Edwards Stadium on the UC Berkeley campus. The time of 59.23 is the third fastest ever run by a Campolindo athlete.

Additional highlights on Friday included Sara Mostatabi's (11) career best of 5:16.68 in the 1600m to qualify for Saturday's finals. Mostatabi was the third Cougar to advance in that event, behind teammates Carrie Verdon (12) and Rachel Meadows (12). Meadows' 5:05.78 trial performance was a seven second improvement, moving her up to 8th on the Campolindo record board.

Also moving on, Meghan Nelson (11) shaved off another few hundredths from her 300 Hurdle time, finishing in 46.48.

Those performances turned out to be just the warm ups for Saturday's finals however.

In the 1600m final, Verdon shot to the front off the first turn on her way to a 72 second opening lap. The junior went on to run splits of 74 and 75 seconds before charging home in 70. That final push helped her pull away from Castro Valley's Kelsey Santistiban for the victory in a new personal best of 4:51.80.

Meanwhile, Meadows stalked her own 1600m state meet qualification by hanging on to the chase pack, made up of five competitors through the first 1200m. On the final lap the group broke apart and Meadows found herself fighting to keep pace. In the end, the junior crossed the line in fifth place, one spot out of automatic qualification. Yet, with Verdon's plan to drop the 1600m in order to concentrate on the eight lap race at state, Meadows had earned her ticket to Fresno.

The win earned Verdon a second consecutive state championship berth in the event after her runner-up performance last year. Her 2011 time now stands second in school history, just three seconds back from Lisa Sandel's 4:48.4 mark set in 1980. Meadows' time of 5:01.54 also moves her up the all-time list to fourth.

Nelson kept the record ball rolling with another improvement, finishing her 300 Hurdle final in 6th place with the second fastest time in school history: 46.42.

The impressive day was then capped by Verdon's second victory, this time in the 3200m, where she was content to run behind the leaders before accelerating through the last 300m to defeat Santistiban again. Juliet Farnan (12) provided the fourth all-time mark of the meet for the Cougars, as she knocked ten seconds from her previous best, finishing in 11:20.15. The time lands Farnan in 9th position on the Campolindo record board.

Also competing Saturday were Margaret (12) and Jane Macy (12) in the discus, and Swanson in the high jump and long jump. Margaret Macy showed consistency with another toss over the 100 foot barrier, while Swanson earned a place in the elite eight for long jump.

Thomas Joyce (12) just missed state meet qualification in the 3200m, finishing fifth in 9:20.01 while teammates Dylan Laucher (11) and Vinson Compestine (12) were 12th and 15th respectively.

Friday's exhibition 3200 Relay squads included fine personal bests for 800m from Adam Hathaway (13), Tony Knox (12) and Cameron Sun (13). Sun's 2:06 split for two laps was a seven second improvement!
