10:22.50 Earns Podium Step for Verdon Battling back from adversity, Carrie Verdon (12) sprinted past four of the state's best distance runners in the closing moments to claim third place in the 3200m at the California state track & field championships on Saturday. Pushing aside the wet weather, a sore throat, and a bumpy ride that had the diminutive star trading elbows with competitors, Verdon used an impressive kick over the final 120m to take back ground given up in the previous lap and a half. That gap was partly due to a counting mistake that had the junior veteran briefly confused as to whether or not she was on her final lap. Only after passing the infield clock at the 200m mark was Verdon certain that she was on her final turn. Luckily, there was just enough race left for the distance ace to reel in her rivals, including Rebecca Merha of Palos Verdes and 1600m runner-up Alli Billmeyer of Torrey Pines. Verdon cross the line just six one-hundredths of a second ahead of Billmeyer, in 10:22.50. The time sets a new Campolindo school record by seven seconds! At Friday's trials, Rachel Meadows (12) wrapped up her surprising 2011 season with a 5:14 finish in the 1600m.
