Joyce Splits 4:12.8 as Boys' Squad Lowers 6400m Relay Record at Mt. SAC

Adding to his already legendary 2012 season, Thomas Joyce (12) took the baton in 12th place after Keith Geiger's (12) 4:27.8 opening leg of the Mt. SAC 4x1600m relay. Four minutes and 12.8 seconds later, Joyce streaked through the exchange zone with the lead. Adam Hathaway (13) turned in a solid 4:29.0 effort before handing off to Vinson Compestine (12).

The total time of 17:42.78 eclipses the school record mark the quartet set just two weeks prior at the Arcadia Invite.

For the girls' 4x1600m squad, a dropped baton in the opening leg marred what should have been a second record breaking performance. Mary Orders (15) pulled the team back into contention with a 5:13.5 split before Carrie Verdon (12) anchored in 4:56.9. The Cougars showed there grit as they overcame the miscue to finish 6th in the elite field.

Earlier in the meet, Margaret Macy (12) improved her 7th All-Time discus mark to 112-4.

Farnan Puts DMR in Mix with 3:46 Opening Leg; Verdon Closes in 4:53 to Seal Record Run; Boys Best 2009 Mark

Avenging a tough break in Friday's 6400m relay, where Juliet Farnan (12) lost her grip on the baton, the veteran lead-off runner put her distance medley squad in the hunt with a 1200m split of 3:46.5. The mark is the fastest ever run by a Campolindo athlete, and helped the Cougars knock nearly 14 seconds off the school record. After 400m and 800m legs by Brighie Leach (15) and Rachel Johnson (15), respectively, it was left to senior super star Carrie Verdon (12) to close the deal. Clocking 4:53.1 for the four lap anchor leg, Verdon moved the team up three places to finish 4th in the Mt. SAC Relays' invitational section.

On the heels of the girls' race, the boys team ran from the front through two legs before hanging on to finish 6th in 10:28.61, just over a second faster than the school record set in 2009. Thomas Joyce (12) again asserted his dominance, roaring to a 3:05.8 opening 1200m split. Ryan Hoffman (14) then did his part in 50.6 for 400m before handing off to Adam Hathaway (13). The long distance specialist took advantage of the opportunity to crush his previous 800m best and keep his team in the battle. Keith Geiger (12) closed out the race in 4:29.4.

In field event action during the day, Hadley Swanson (13) showed consistency with her long jump mark of 17-2 and a high jump clearance of 5-2.
