Leach Lands Podium Spot in Brooks' Mile
Rallying for one last contest in her high school career, Brighie Leach (15) traveled north, to the Brooks' PR Invitational in Seattle Washington, to face a select field of the nation's best milers. A late addition to the race, Leach made the most of the opportunity.
After a 69 second opening lap, the field slowed. A cluster of 11 contenders rolled through the half-way point in 2:29. In another example of her fearlessness, Leach swung wide to take the lead, and string out the race over the next 400m.
At the bell, the Princeton bound senior continued to push the pace. Only with 200m remaining was she finally caught by Colorado's Katie Rainsberger and eventual winner, Ella Donaghu of Oregon. The trio held off the rest of the field as the crowd roared through the homestretch.
Leach finished a surprising 3rd in a time of 4:45.61, which converts to 4:43.96 for the 1600m distance.
