Cougars Host Nation's Best at April 17 Distance Fest; Buckley Climbs 1600 List

Athletes from a dozen schools converged on Bob Wilson Stadium for a festival of mixed gender 1600m heats and a pair of elite distance medley relay races on the evening of April 17. Though early competition was marred by stiff wind down the backstretch, as the sun set, the air became cool and calm, setting the table for an epic finale.

The boys' distance medley relay lived up to its hype, with Bellarmine Prep setting the early pace while Jesuit of Carmichael closed late to earn the victory. The Marauders were propelled by a 4:10 anchor leg from Ajani Salcido. There winning time of 10:07.25 is a new stadium record and 2nd fastest mark in the nation for 2021. Bellermine's runner-up time of 10:12.66 is currently #3 in the U.S.

Leading the charge for the Cougars was Ellie Buckley (23), who posted a personal best of 5:10.62 in her heat of the 1600m before doubling back at the end of the day to anchor her DMR squad in 5:12.6. Buckley's open performance moves her to #20 on the Campolindo all-time list.

Caroline McCool (23) and Nina Damiano (24) also notched improvements in their respective 1600m heats. McCool lowered her mark to 5:45.19 while Damiano finished in 6:27.63.

The most improved athlete on the boys' side also set the top mark for the Cougars. Dylan Gunn (21) finished 5th in the fastest heat of the day, lowering his career best for the 4-lap effort to 4:24.03. Also impressive, Emilio Penate (24) lowered his time by over 11 seconds, finishing in 5:31.48.
