Schnayer Snatches State Shot Title from Defending Champ; Volkmer 8th in 3200m

For the 1st time in school history, Campolindo track & field came away from the California State Meet with a pair of medalists and an individual event champion.

Hosted once again in Buchanan High School's Veterans Memorial Stadium, the greatest high school track meet in the country saw sensational efforts from 6 Cougar competitors, including a come-from-behind victory in the shot put finals from Pinkie Schnayer (24).

The state-leading senior fell behind in the 5th round following an explosive 46-8.75 heave from defending champion Aja Johnson of Notre Dame. It was only the 2nd mark in the competition over 46 feet, moving her 7.5 inches ahead Schnayer's previous toss and into the lead.

The Campolindo fans were collectively perturbed when the mark was announced. Schnayer immediately recalled her only defeat of the season, which happened 6 weeks earlier in the same venue facing the same opponent. After a brief pause to collect herself, Schnayer settled into her stance, spun across the ring, and launched the winner: 47 feet, 3.75 inches.

The distance would not be challenged through the final round and Schnayer subsequently stepped atop the podium as the state champion, the 1st in school history.

Shortly thereafter, the girls' 4x800 relay squad posted another record-board worthy mark thanks to an outstanding 2:18.6 lead-off leg from Kate Kabenina (24) and a 2:14.6 3rd leg from Claire Andrzejek (26).

The night was capped with a 3200m race for the ages. While East Lake's Jaelyn Willaims set a ferocious sub-10 pace at the lead, Shea Volkmer (24) clung to a chase pack that flew through the 1st mile in 5:01. The distance standout then held on to finish 8th, nearly equaling her season best in 10:20.57.
