Section Leaders Shine after Rain Delays Finals; Girls Claim League Championships

With each posting section-leading performances at Saturday's DAL Championship Finals, Pinkie Schnayer (24) and Shea Volkmer (24) led their varsity girls' squad to a 3rd-consecutive league title.

With the throwing standout adding a shot put victory to the discus title she earned a week earlier and the distance sensation finishing 1st in the 1600 and the 3200 and placing 2nd in the 800, the duo accounted for 48 of their squad's 134 points. The total was 55 points ahead of runner up Clayton Valley.

The day began dubiously with heavy rainfall and gusting winds forcing the games committee to delay a schedule that had already been amended earlier in the week. When competition finally commenced, much of the facility remained under water, including the throwing rings.

In spite of the slick surface and cold temperature, Schnayer managed to unleash a rocket into the sector to improve her state-leading mark to 48 feet, 4 inches. It was a 5 inch improvement over her previous best and outdistanced 2nd place by nearly 13 feet. The mark is now the 2nd-best in the history of the North Coast Section.

A 2nd and perhaps more improbable stadium record was recorded in the girls' 3200m. After winning the 1600m with a 70-second final lap that saw her streak away from the field and then battling 800m specialist Charlotte Orr of Las Lomas in an epic 2-lap duel, Volkmer lined up for the start of her 3rd race of the day facing the section's #2 performer in the event.

Nevertheless, the senior appeared hardly winded by her previous 1.5-miles of racing, flying away on winged feet from her nearest rivals and reaching the halfway point in 5:08. Hardly slowing over the final mile, Volkmer hammered down the homestretch to take the tape in 10:20.45, which ranks 11th best in section history and just 9-one hundredths behind the school record set in 2015 by Brighie Leach.

Another record-board performance was turned in by Claire Andrzejek (26) in the 800m final. The sophomore clung to the heels of the section leaders to finish 4th in 2:18.82. The mark stands as 9th best for Campolindo.

Additional highlights included Grace Allen (25), who scored 5th place with a mark of 32 feet.

And perhaps the biggest surprise came from a breakout runner-up finish in the 100 hurdles by Laurel Tringe (24). The senior veteran dropped her PR by almost 2 seconds to overtake several of the favorites.

Thomas Berg (26) improved his wind-legal 100m time to 11.12 to help the varsity boys finish 3rd in the team standings while Clark Gregory (27) rose to the occasion for the runner-up frosh soph boys with a sizable PR in the 1600m followed by a season best in the 3200m.

The girls' frosh soph squad was aided to victory by a hat trick in the distance races from Kiona McCasland (27).
