Meet of Champions RESULTS AT BOTTOM OF PAGE
Girls' Relays Lord over Section at MOC; Li, Boys' 4x800 Punch Tickets to State Meet For the 1st time in school history, the Campolindo girls are NCS champions in both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays with victories over the best of the section at Saturday's Meet of Champions hosted at Gaels Stadium in Dublin. After preliminary rounds in most running events on Friday, the Cougars opened Saturday with an improvement by over 2 tenths to crack 47 seconds for the 1st time, claiming the 4x100 relay victory over a highly touted Pittsburg squad. Improved exchanges gave Campolindo a sizable advantage through 3 legs before senior Sarah Graves (26) held off the Pirates' hard-charging anchor to win in 46.99, just 1-one hundredth ahead of the runners-up. The astonishing feat with followed by a series of state-qualifying efforts, including 2nd place finishes for Jasmine McCasland (27) and Claire Andrzejek (26) in the 400m and 800m, respectively. Andrzejek broke her own school record in the 2-lap race, nearly chasing down heavily favored Josie Hill of Sonoma Academy. McCasland and Andrzejek joined Sophia Moore (28), who had herself qualified for the CIF championships on Friday with a clearance in the pole vault of 11 feet, 2 inches. Friday evening also saw a short-handed boys' 4x800 relay survive a 3-team battle for just 2 qualifying berths. While the Cougars entered the race with the top time in the section, they were without 800m school record holder Caden Ehrhorn (28), who was sidelined with illness. Instead, freshman Thomas Riley (29), having just run a personal best of 1:57.07 to qualify for the open 800m finals, took the baton on the 3rd leg to keep his squad in contention. At the final exchange, both Maria Carrillo and Analy had caught the leaders. First Analy, and then Maria Carrillo, passed Cody De La Cruz (26) over the final leg's opening lap. 600m in, it appeared the Cougars senior was beginning to lose contact with the duo battling for the win. However, with 100m remaining, De La Cruz summoned 1 last gear to close the distance on 2nd place. In the final meters the Analy anchor stumbled and De La Cruz surged ahead. The 7:52.38 clocking for 2nd place is #2 in school history and advances Campolindo to the state meet for the 1st time in the event. Also heading to Clovis is Malik Li (26), who improved his pole vault school record to 15 feet, 6 inches, to claim 2nd place in the boys' competition on Saturday. After qualifying with freshman Ilinca Galatanu (29) contributing a 3rd leg, the girls' 4x400 relay closed out Saturday's running event finals with a wire-to-wire victory.
