Stars Shine at Stanford Invite; Ehrhorn Claims #2 All-Time Mark for 1600m

Ideal conditions greeted athletes at the Friday afternoon portion of the Stanford Invitational held at Cobb Track and Angel Field on the university campus in Palo Alto. The Campolindo girls' distance squad again fielded a distance medley relay, this time featuring a solid lead-off leg from Kiona McCasland (27), who improved her 1200m split time to 3:48.6.

The boys team followed in the same event with an epic performance in spite of a last-minute roster change due to injury. The unflappable Nikola Van Delft (27) skipped his planned individual opportunity in the open 3200m race to cover the anchor leg of the DMR with a fine 4:26.9 split to keep the squad in contention among a deep and talented field.

While the boys' race was unusually tactical for a distance relay, Caden Ehrhorn (28) provided a lead-off 1200m split of 3:07.6, 2nd-fastest in school history, and Chase Nickens (28) followed with a 50.7 split for 400m, to earn a 4th place finish and new school record.

Day 2 of the event was particularly exciting for the Cougars, with multiple individuals and relay teams moving up the all-time lists.

Topping the highlights was Ehrhorn, who double back to run the 2nd-fastest 1600m race in Campolindo history. After sitting in the pack for 2 laps, the sophomore negative split the final 800m, briefly taking the lead before being overtaking by another national-class 10th grader from Redondo Union. Ehrhorn's 4:10.61 for the 4-lap event is just 26 one hundredths behind the mark set be legendary distance start Thomas Joyce.

Claire Andrzejek (26) followed up Ehrhorn's fireworks with an impressive improvement of her own, battling back from a conservative first lap to negative split her 800m race and finish 10th overall in 2:15.00.

In the girls' sprint relay events, Campolindo continued its remarkable ascension among section royalty, 1st improving its 400 relay mark to 48.16, good enough for 2nd on the all-time list, and then dropping a 3:55.96 bomb in the 1600 relay to claim the #1 mark in the North Coast Section, ahead of perennial powers Pittsburg and Dublin. Key to the performance was the a 57.0 split time from Jasmine McCasland (27) and a gutsy anchor leg from Sarah Graves (26).
