Five Squads Claim Championship Titles; Pulford, Verdon, Wong, Crisp, Caspillo, Chase Sweep Individual Honors
Saturday's unprecedented FIVE division victories, along with a valiant one point runner-up effort from the junior varsity girls' squad, put an exclamation point on an incredible fall campaign for the Cougar harriers.
With giant improvements across the board at Saturday's DFAL Championships, nearly every athlete finished the 2008 season with a personal best.
Leading the boys' dramatic performance surge was Jacob Phillips (12), whose 15:42 clocking in the junior varsity race was two minutes and twenty one seconds faster than his previous best. Frosh soph competitor Jamie Sanderson (12) used an inspired first mile to insure a two minute PR of his own, finishing in 47th place.
In the dominating team victory for the frosh soph girls' squad, Juliet Farnan (12) knocked an incredible 2:36 off her Hidden Valley Park course record from just five weeks earlier, while Brooke Martini (12) roared to a third place individual finish by way of a two minute improvement.
The season finale featured Cougar athletes taking top honors in each of the six divisions! Daelyn Chase (12) bolted to the lead of the frosh soph girls' race at the gun and claimed the title with an eighteen second advantage over runner-up Rachel Meadows (12). Veteran Alison Crisp (10) moved to the lead late in the girls' junior varsity competition, holding off teammate Emily Brennan (10) for the victory.
In the frosh soph boys' division, Wesley Caspillo (12) became the third consecutive Cougar to top the league, breaking the tape in 11:08. Jared Wong (09) held off teammate Jason Budge (09) to take the individual junior varsity title, leading a Campolindo route in the team scoring.
The sensational day was capped by individual wins for Robert Pulford (09) and Carrrie Verdon (12) in the varsity boys' and varsity girls' races respectively.
