Boys Set Hayward Team Time Record; Girls Finish Second to Qualify for CIF State Championships
With five finishers under 16:00, the 2008 Cougar Varsity Boys laid claim to the greatest team performance of all time on the Hayward High School course. Saturday's victory over highly touted Petaluma in the Division III race was a true team effort as each Campolindo athlete improved over their 2007 individual time, executing a race plan that called for the veteran heavy squad to patiently allow their opponents to control the pace before surging through the first half of the third mile.
Robert Pulford (09) led the charge, finishing 2nd in 15:10, with teammate Ross Geiger (09) closing impressively to finish 4th in 15:28. Colby Pines (09) and Michael Brondello (09) traded points with Petaluma's third and fourth finishers before Nate Cox (09) wrapped up the win with his clutch 14th place finish.
The victory sets up the Cougar harriers for a showdown of epic proportions at this Saturday's CIF State Championships in Fresno. No doubt, Petaluma will be looking for revenge, while number one ranked Barstow expects to defend their title streak. After their NCS performance, it is not likely Campolindo will be sneaking up on anyone at the big dance.
For the Varsity Girls, it was a day of mixed emotions. The Cougars qualified for the state meet with a runner-up performance to section rival Maria Carrillo. Carrie Verdon (12) made her post season debut with an exceptional 3rd place finish while veteran Lisa Rosenthal (09) ran second for the squad in 18:52.
