VERDON RULES NCS
Duo Sets Fastest Times as Girls Romp in Wet, Muddy Conditions; Boys Finish 2nd

Leaving little doubt about the identities of the North Coast Section's top two runners, Carrie Verdon (12) and Grace Orders (11) rushed to an early lead in the Division III race on the Hayward High School 3.0 mile course. Not only did the tandem dominate the rest of the DIII competition, they left the entire section in their wake, finishing with the top two times of the day out of the five division field that included 572 athletes from 169 schools at the 2010 NCS cross country Championships.

Verdon's 17:19 mark also crushed the DIII all-time course record by 18 seconds, while Orders finished in 17:38 for the third fastest course performance in division history. Verdon's time is just over a minute faster than her 3rd place clocking of a year ago, while Orders dropped 48 seconds from 2009. Considering the windy, wet conditions on Saturday only magnifies their achievement!

The varsity girls also claimed the team title in decisive fashion with clutch efforts from Rachel Meadows (12), who crossed the line 6th in 18:40, and 10th and 11th place finishes from Juliet Farnan (12) and Sara Mostatabi (11), respectively. For Farnan, it is a thirteen place, 21 second improvement over her heroic 2009 performance. Meadows, who never ran a varsity race until the 2010 season, is easily the division's rookie of the year.

The varsity boys held on to second place behind the continued front-running prowess of Thomas Joyce (12), who finished third in the fastest East Bay Area athlete time of the day. Not far behind were teammates Dylan Laucher (11) in 11th, and Vinson Compestine (12) in 16th. Joyce improved 59 seconds over his 47th place finish in 2009.

The North Bay's squad from Petaluma used an impressive cluster of four athletes in the top twelve to beat the favored Cougars, who now advance to the CIF State Championships on November 27th.
