Poised Fong Finishes First, Leads JV Boys to Runner-Up Team Total at Ed Sias
After passing the 800m mark in eighth place, veteran Kevin Fong (13) picked off competitors over the next mile of the Hidden Valley Park course until there was no one left to catch. The junior team captain then held off the field take the junior varsity individual title at Saturday's 27th annual Ed Sias Invitational, co-hosted by Campolindo and College Park.
With strong support from the likes of Andy VanHeuit (13), who dropped 1:35 from his previous year's time to finish 21st, and Rod Farvard (13), who also knocked over a minute off his 2010 performance, the junior varsity squad managed a 2nd place team score behind De La Salle.
Rookies Chris Garvey (14), Drew Gustafson (15), and Kevin Buckley (15) each used a week of experience to set new two-mile bests by over a minute.
On the girls' side, Rachel Johnson (15) wasted little time in asserting herself as the next big thing, cracking the thirteen minute mark and finishing 4th in the frosh soph girls' race. Mary Orders (15), who lead Johnson through most of the course, crossed the line in 5th while teammate Brighie Leach (15) clocked the fourth fastest Cougar girls time in 13:28.
The biggest improvement over last year came from Ellen Hann (14), who ran 58 seconds faster to grab 24th place in the frosh soph race. Jessie Thompson (13) and Margeaux Bergman (13) continued to reap the rewards of hard work by lowering their times by 54 and 47 seconds, respectively, over last weeks results.
