Varsity Girls Close Gap on State Leaders, Yabu Helps Boys to 5th Place at Stanford

With "guns fully loaded," the varsity girls squad squared off against several of the state's best programs in the seeded division at Saturday's Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto. Led by Brighie Leach (15), who made her season debut after 2 consecutive weeks of college visits, the girls finished just 6 points shy of Davis Senior and Bella Vista to earn 3rd place. Their team time of 92:22 was the fastest in school history on the Stanford Golf Course and good enough for 2nd overall for the day.

Leach was joined in the lead pack by teammate Toni Finnane (15), who crossed the line in 6th place to earn the Cougars a lethal 11 points for their first 2 finishers. Mary Orders (15) was next in line, dropping over a minute from her 2013 Stanford performance and setting a new 5k best by 18 seconds.

Hana Sun (16) and Rachel Johnson (15) rounded out the scoring in 38th and 42nd place, respectively.

Entering the meet as the number 8 team in the state, the 109 point score is sure to push their ranking into the top 5.

Jared Yabu (18) and Kevin Buckley (15) kept the boys' hopes afloat with significant improvements of their own. Yabu used a fantastic final mile to take over the team's "top gun" status, dropping 1:38 from his performance of a year ago, and 59 seconds from his 5k career best.

Buckley's 16:17 finish was an 8 second per mile improvement over his pervious best performance at the 2013 NCS Championships.
