Wells Defies Calculations, Improves 17 Seconds over Target at Team Time Trials In spite of scientific calculations based upon his previous 1600m best, his current 2 mile PR, and his typical training paces in practice, Hayden Wells (17) defied expectations to win his heat at Saturday's annual team time trials, and improve over his target time by a whopping 17 seconds. Miranda Protzen (15) also delivered a surprising 4 lap effort, winning her heat in 6:29.59. The mark was 16 seconds faster than her target time. The fastest time on the day came in the final heat as Jonathan Semenza (16) came from behind after a controlled first half. Semenza's 4:40.05 was followed closely by Nathaniel Sauerberg's (16) 4:40.56. Kevin Buckley (15) and Jared Yabu (17) were also just 1 second back. Top honors for the girls went to Brighie Leach (15) who just missed the sub-5 minute mark, finishing 2nd in her heat at 5:01.73. Will Buckley (16) crushed his previous best 1600m mark, running a 5:21.34 that included a spirited homestretch battle. |
