Center Meet #1 RESULTS AT BOTTOM OF PAGE
Team Sweeps 3rd Consecutive Center Meet; Yabu Battles to All-Time Record With a sweep of all 6 divisions at Wednesday’s first DFAL center meet of 2015, the cougars picked up where they left off in 2014, as they push towards antoher perfect league-season record. Rookie sensation Teddy Buckley (19) led of the day with an impressive win in the frosh soph boys' race. Buckley took control in the middle of the race to finish in 11:11, a 32 second improvement over his previous course best. Right on his heels was Casey Chambers (18), who finished in 11:14 to give the cougars a fantastic 1-2 punch. Steady performances from Ethan Sauerberg (18) and Timothy Sams (18) along with a substantial improvement from Thibault Gourlin (18) gave the cougars a lethal scoring quintet. The closest team battle of the day took place in the frosh soph girls' race, where clutch performances from Kira D’Iorio (19) and Elizabeth Garcia (18) were enough to hold off a strong Las Lomas squad, 27-29. The girls' JV race featured an impressive 1-2-3 finish from Robin Powell (16), Maria Foerst (17), and Sophia Settle (16), helping to build a lopsided win over the rest of the league. A similar outcome occurred in the boys' JV race as Matt McAuliffe (16), Gabriel Valverde-Turner (17), Dylan Hoover (17), and Navid Boozarpour (17) all placed in the top 5, extending that squad's undefeated streak in DFAL competition to a staggering 8 years! Both varsity races featured their fair share of drama and intrigue. Hana Sun (16) led another solid team performance for the varsity girls' team, which placed 4 scorers in front of every other teams #3 runner to secure the win. The highlight of the day came in the varsity boys' race, where a thrilling battle between Jared Yabu (17) and Cameron Gaskell of Acalanes inspired another complete-team performance. Yabu clung behind the defending league champion for the entire race, making a late bid for the win as the two approached the finishing chute. Gaskell managed to hold on for the victory, finishing a few steps ahead as both runners were clocked at 15:31, an impressive early season performance on the notoriously tough Hidden Valley Park 3-mile course. In fact, Yabu’s time is a new school course record, just slightly faster than two-time state champion Aidan Goltra’s mark in 2012. The boy’s team once again demonstrated their depth, placing all 5 scorers in the top 8 to push their own undefeated streak in the league to 7 consecutive seasons. |
