Cougars Sweep Team Titles; JV Boys Claim Top 7 Places to Rout Field; Chao Sisters Take 2 at League Championships As competitors neared the mile mark in the junior varsity boys' race at Saturday's DAL cross country championships on the Hidden Valley Park course, College Park's Jake Heinlein and Northgate's Patrick Thierry were the league's last hope for breaking up Campolindo's pack of 7 and spoiling a perfect score. Hope died in the 2nd mile. Led by an individual championship performance from Jeremy Ahn (18), the Cougars added a 10th league title to their 10-year undefeated streak in resounding fashion. Runner-up Colin Lekki (19) finished just 2 seconds behind Ahn. Casey Chambers (18), Max Essl (19), Cameron Iniguez-Reyes (19), Charlie Woidat (19) and Timothy Sams (18) comprised the remainder of the long string of navy jerseys to cross the line ahead of the 1st non-Campolindo athlete. While the junior varsity boys made their case for "best of all time," the rest of the Cougar squads successfully wrapped up each of their own perfect 2017 league seasons. Depleted by the varsity "call up" of freshman star Sydney Roberts (21), the frosh soph girls showed their grit, fighting off challenges from Las Lomas and Acalanes. Veteran Catherine Zhang (20) took over the top gun title, placing 2nd overall in 13:50. Bianca Pierrat (20), Mia Travis (20) and Gracie Woidat (21) also earned "all league" honors with top 10 finishes. Pierrat's time of 14:20 was an improvement over her 2016 championship performance by a whopping 1:59. Other big-time progress was shown by Izabella Agraz (21) and Katie Strohmeyer (21), who chopped 2:13 and 1:38, respectively, from their early-season course performances. The frosh soph boys' team continued to rely on Sam Morasch (20) and Pablo Nguyen (20), who finished 2nd and 4th, respectively. Freshmen Owen Lekki (21) and Arik Nashan (21) also landed in podium positions while Evan Yabu (21) wrapped up the scoring in 13th place. Yabu beat every other team's #4 and #5 scorers. The contest expected to be most challenging for the Cougars turned into another dominating victory when Adithi Subramaniam (19) and Kira D'Iorio (19) bolted from the starting line to help their squad match the early intensity of College Park. While D'Iorio was gathering up teammates Amy Flett (20) and Kiana Lew (18) over the final stretch, Bianca Chao (19) was crossing the finish line in an astounding 13:33. The 1st-year junior tore through the course unchallenged en route to the individual crown. The varsity girls' individual competition was a bit of a re-run of the junior varsity race as Bianca Chao's sister, senior veteran Isabella Chao (18), also led wire-to-wire. Her win extends Campolindo's hold on the individual varsity girls' league title to 10 years. The individual victory also helped the Cougar squad run away with the team championship in spite of a few missing pieces. Critical contributions came in the form of a 4th place finish from Alicia Hober (20) and a sub-20 minute clocking from Ellie Guthrie (20). The final race of the day saw the return to form of Ethan Sauerberg (18), who set a new course record to finish 3rd for his squad and 9th overall. Also improving was Dylan Cronin (20), who ascended to the #5 position on the squad, earning "all-league" recognition as the 12th finisher. Edward Buckley (19) ran at the front for the Cougars, finishing 3rd in his 1st sub-16 minute performance on the Hidden Valley Park 3.0 mile course. The varsity boys held off a strong effort from Las Lomas to secure their 10th consecutive undefeated league season. A 1:36 improvement over his 2016 championship performance from Andres Artale (20) and a 6:13 improvement over his previous course best from Kyle Moe (21) in the junior varsity boys' division provided additional highlights. Anastazia Lopez (21) knocked 2:45 from her 1st center meet time.
