Buckley, Lodewick Set Stadium Records at 1st-Ever 5000-Meter XC Track Trials The Covid-19 pandemic may have wiped out the traditional fall cross country season, but it also offered an unusual opportunity for athletes participating in the the XC & Track Club sports camp to tackle the 5000-meter distance around the oval. Saturday evening's conditions turned out to be perfect, with the temperature just under 50 degrees and little wind. The result was a festive evening under the lights which capped the XC & Track Club 12-week fall training program. Sophomores Ellie Buckley (23) and Alex Lodewick (23) snagged the stadium records for their respective genders while several of their teammates demonstrated profound progress over previous time trial performances posted earlier in the year. Buckley's 18:14.48 record-setting mark is also a new personal best for the distance, eclipsing her finishing time at the 2019 cross country state championships. Also earning 5k PRs were Quinn Guthrie (23) and Angeni Lieben (22). Lieben's time of 20:12.55 is 79 seconds faster than her previous career best. In the boys' field, 3 veteran athletes managed to lower their times by over a minute. Ethan Cho (23) clocked 19:07.22 while Alec Driver (21) landed the 4th-fastest time of the night, finishing in 17:06.92. The most improved athlete of the evening was Blake Webster (23), who cranked out a 1-minute and 41-second improvement to finish 5th. Rookie highlights included a sub-18-minute performance from Alejandro Canales (22) and freshman Makena Weberski's sensational 18:32.81 finish to earn the girls' runner-up honors.
