Perfect Conditions Lift Harriers at Hidden Valley Park 2 & 3-Mile Cross Country Test
Air quality improved drastically over the 48 hours preceding Saturday morning's time trial on the rugged Hidden Valley Park 2 and 3-mile courses. By race time, wild-fire smoke had been pushed east by gentle on-shore winds and a thin cloud cover held temperatures in the 70s.
The event offered an opportunity for many athletes to improve on times they posted on the course in July. Leading the way was Emilio Penate (24), who knocked an impressive 2 minutes and 20 seconds off his previous best in spite of arriving just minutes before his race time.
Connor Naughten (24) also showed significant improvement, finishing the 2-mile course in 13:39 to shed over a minute from his mid-summer performance.
After a bold start in the 3-mile action, Owen Lekki (21) managed to hang on for a 7-second personal best. His time of 16:38 now ranks the senior among the top-50 all-time Campolindo athletes on the historic course.
Henry Jaffe (24), Paulo Trento (24), and Tai Lee (23) also showed solid progress with season-best marks.
The girls' competition featured a trio of freshman continuing to work their way up the depth chart. Pressing the pace from the start, Shea Volkmer (24) nearly claimed a pod win with an outstanding 13:22 finish. The time is among the fastest every recorded by a 1st-year athlete on the course, and ranks Volkmer among the top 30 Campolindo athletes of all-time.
Daisy Penney (24) and Kate Kabenina (24) also showed promise by breaking the 15-minute barrier. Penney lowered her course best by 54 seconds while Kabenina knocked 24 seconds from her previous mark.
Veteran girls' enjoying the opportunity to compete included Gracie Woidat (21) and Jessie Rosiak (21), who each showed significant improvement over times posted in the middle of the summer.
