Lodewick Runs to Record at Nike Invite

Aside from a mild but persistent wind, conditions were much improved over the previous week, with morning temperatures in the 60's at Newhall Park at Saturday's Nike Invitational hosted by De La Salle. Leading the way in the Cougars' 3-mile season debut, Alex Lodewick (23) stayed glued to Davis senior Ryan Mitchell at the front in the varsity boys' division. While Lodewick finished 3rd, his time of 15:12 is a 20-second improvement over his 2022 best and moves him to the top of the Campolindo all-time Newhall Park course list.

The 3-mile race also featured a huge improvement from Siddharth Iyer (25), who stepped up from his frosh-soph performance of the previous week to land the #6 position for the varsity squad. Iyer's 5:52 per mile pace was nearly equal to his 2-mile pace at the Ed Sias Invitational. With a sizeable gap between the top-3 finishers and final scorers, the varsity boys finished as runners-up to Jesuit of Sacramento.

Makena Weberski (24) was most improved among the girls finishers, lowering her 3-mile time by 12 seconds. The 18:44 performance landed her 10th place in the varsity race, just behind teammate Ellie Buckley (23). With Shea Volkmer (23) up front and Sloan Pullen (25) taking over the 4th position, the varsity girls finished 2nd behind a strong Los Altos team.

The girls' team depth was on display in the junior varsity 3-mile division with Rachel Moen (24) winning in her first attempt at the distance. The junior rookie posted the 5th fastest time of the day for the Cougars, crossing the line in 20:01.

Angali Rao (26), Elle Reisman (26), and Helen Shephard (25) showed the greatest progress through the week, each making gains by nearly a minute over their Ed Sias Invite 2-mile times. Michael Wen (26) was the most improved of the day however, dropping 2 minutes and 45 seconds from his previous best.
