Volkmer Leads Impressive Train Under 14-Minute Barrier in Little Ed Girls' Race Junior veteran Shea Volkmer (24) shot to the front of the girls' 2-mile practice race on Friday at the gun and never looked back. The Cougars' ace built an impressive gap between herself and her nearest rival, finishing almost 1 minute ahead of 2nd place and posting one of the all-time fastest marks on the Hidden Valley Park course. Backing up Volkmer, Makena Weberski (24) and Anya Houston (26) crossed the line within 6 seconds of each other. Houston's time of 13:14 is the 5th fastest ever run by a Campolindo freshman on the course. All told, 7 Cougars finished among the top 10, all with times under 14 minutes. The biggest improvements in the girls' division of the annual Little Ed meet came from a pair of freshmen: Carina Trento (26) bested her previous 2-mile performance by 1 minute and 47 seconds, which was good enough for 14th place in a field that also included athletes from Alhambra and College Park High Schools. Colbie Freese (26) also showed excellent progress with a 1-minute and 35-second improvement of her own. The boys' competition was dominated by Alex Lodewick (23), who finished with a 28-second advantage over teammate and runner-up Connor McGhee (23). The pair were the only athletes to break the 11-minute barrier on the day. Lodewick's time of 10:21 is 3rd best in school history on the course. Sean Hu (26) and Alessandro Paolieri (23) were the most improved boys, with the former knocking 37 seconds from his summer time-trial mark and the later dropping 22 seconds from his 2021 season best.
