Mid-Season Mania 1600m Invitational RESULTS AT BOTTOM OF PAGE
Youngsters Lead PR Train through Heat Wave at Mid-Season Mania 1600 Invite Afternoon temperatures climbed to 100 degrees in Bob Wilson Stadium prior to the 4:30pm start of the annual Mid-Season Mania 1600m Invitational hosted by the Cougars on Wednesday, October 2. Per new state law, schools are mandated to cancel athletic activities if wetbulb globe test readings are not within the legal range. With after-school sports practices already having been canceled an hour earlier and the rays of an unusually harsh autumn sun radiating off the track and turf, coaches and athletes were rather surprised to receive the go-ahead for the event. While shadows were just peaking across the outer lanes of the homestretch, the 1st several heats saw competitors grind out impressive performances in spite of the challenging conditions, including Ryan LaMarche (28), who finished their 4 laps in 7:33.36. Topping the list of PR's by returning competitors was Josiah Beardsley (25), who lowered his 2023 mark by 47 seconds to finish in 4:48.69. Zachary Min (27) and Taejin Chung (27) also showed impressive progress with improvements of 51 seconds and 44 seconds, respectively. Gaining ground on the girls' side, Mai Lam Nguyen (27) crossed the line in 7:19.98, which is 48 seconds faster than her time from last year's meet. As the sun set behind the ridge line on the west-side of the stadium, conditions improved dramatically. Many Cougars took advantage, including Meeran Gill (25), who posted perhaps the best performance of her high school running career with a 5:41.39 clocking. It was the 4th-best on the squad and her 1st-time breaking 6 minutes. Surprisingly, it was the newest members of the team who stepped to the font of the depth chart. Freshman Neela Whatley (28) produced the fastest time of the day for the Campolindo girls' squad at 5:06.18, which was good enough for 2nd place in her heat. Leading the boys was freshman sensation Caden Ehrhorn (28), who unleashed a nasty kick in the final 200m to nab 3rd place in the final race of the evening.
