Whatley Shines in Cool Temps at Rough Rider; Boys Finish 4th in Stacked Field

Perfect conditions helped foster sensational times on the Woodward Park 5k course at Saturday's Rough Rider Invitational hosted by Roosevelt High School. The Cougars' strong performances were topped by freshmen in both the girls' and boys' varsity large school divisions. For the girls, it was freshman standout Neela Whatley (28) who took full advantage of the cool temperatures to post a record-board worthy time of 17:50, which ranks 8th all-time for Campolindo.

The girls' race also featured a 1st-time sub-20 minute effort from Kaitlyn Kinsey (27), who continues to be one of the most dependable members of the varsity squad. Yet, the most significant improvement came from senior Meeran Gill (25), who continued to assert herself as a contender for varsity post-season consideration by lower her course record over 3 minutes, finishing in 20:09.

While the improvements are promising, with the core of the varsity squad still sidelined with injury and illness, the girls fell to 10th overall in the team standings.

The boys' competition was fierce, with powerhouse programs like state-ranked Matilda Torres, Vacaville, and Clovis East inspiring a torrid early pace. Caden Ehrhorn (28) and Gavin Gunn (27) proved ready for the challenge, still closing well after the impressive opening mile. Ehrhorn finished 14th in 15:35, which is now 8th best in school history, while Gunn was close behind at 15:42.

Maxson Cook (25), Drew Shogan (27), and Jack Durden (27), filled in the remaining scoring positions as the boys posted a pack margin of just 47 seconds to earn 4th place.

Solid improvements on the course were also turned in by Nolan Henwood (25), who ran 57 seconds faster than his 2023 mark, and Samuel Hearn (27), who dropped his mark by 53 seconds.
