Boys Reclaim NCS Team Record on State Course; Gregory Debuts as Top Finisher

With the return of Clark Gregory (27) and Gavin Gunn (27), along with the debut of Chase Nickens (28), the already impressive season for the defending state champions found a new gear at Friday's Rough Rider Invitational hosted on the historic Woodward Park 5k course. Facing off against 2 of California's top-ranked squads, Vacaville and Matilda Torres, the Cougars proved themselves worthy of their own early-season accolades with an emphatic 40-point victory in the varsity large-school division.

While Gregory and Caden Ehrhorn (28) provided the lowest sticks with 2nd and 3rd-place finishes, it was the trio of Gunn, Nikola Van Delft (27), and Jack Durden (27) crossing the line within 5 seconds of one another in 11th, 13th, and 14th place that propelled the squad to the NCS team-time record of 77:30, overtaking the mark set by Dublin High School a decade earlier.

The jaw-dropping rate of improvement among the varsity boys continued as Taiyo Chiba (27) dropped his best time on the course by over 2 minutes. Van Delft improved by 1:45 and Samuel Hearn (27), who also broke the 16-minute barrier, improved by 1:34.

The girls' competition featured a nearly 2-minute improvement by Sophie Lechner (27), who became the squad's #3 scorer. Rana Beeson (28) finished 4th for the team in her 1st varsity appearance.
