DelValle Equals School Record in Vault; Joyce Battles Windy 3200m to Finish 8th
Andres DelValle (12) saved his best for last, vaulting over fifteen feet in the trial round of the California State Championships on Friday to match the school record.
Friday's conditions at Buchanan High School of Clovis were hot, with daytime temperatures reaching 105 degrees. Hadley Swanson (13) juggled the long jump and high jump preliminaries as the heat reached its peak.
Later in the evening, with temperatures still in the 90's, Rhea Jayachandran (12) dropped under the 46 second mark in the 300m hurdles for a third consecutive race to wrap up her high school track career.
On Saturday, Thomas Joyce (12) had to settle for a tactical race as a nasty backstretch wind botched any hopes for a repeat of the time trial like 3200m's of recent years.
With the hesitation of the pack as it pressed into the wind on every lap, Joyce spent much of the race jostling for position, and ran a considerable portion in lanes two and three.
After a 4:37 first mile that kept Joyce amidst the leaders, he closed in 4:34. The 9:11.06 clocking was good enough for eighth place, and the second fastest of his career.
