Girls Repeat as Tri-Valley Champs; Testa, Buckley, Nelson Claim Individual Titles

For the 3rd time this season, the Campolindo boys' 100m school record changed hands as Garrett Nelson (23), who held the record for a matter of minutes with his heat victory at the West Coast Relays on April 1, streaked to the victory at the NCS Tri-Valley Area Championships at Foothill High School on Saturday, May 13.

Conditions were optimal for sprints, with temperatures in the upper 80s and a legal tail wind prevailing down the home stretch for most of the day. Nelson's 10.69 winning mark lowered the previous record set by teammate Josh Myers (23) by 8 hundredths of a second. It was just one of several exceptional performances as the Cougars advanced 25 individual athletes on to the NCS Meet of Champions, to be held at Dublin High School on Friday and Saturday, May 19-20.

The biggest headliner will undoubtedly be Mari Testa (23), who turned in one of the most dominant sprint performances in recent memory. The senior 1st helped the girls' 400 relay to a season best and 5th-all-time mark of 49.80, good enough for 6th overall. She then proceeded to win the 100 hurdles, the 100m, and the 200m. Her times in the later 2 events are new school records.

Also picking up multiple victories was Ellie Buckley, who dominated the 1600m and 3200m events. 1st, the veteran distance standout used a negative split to surge away from all contenders save her own teammate, Shea Volkmer (24), to win the 4-lap effort in 5:00.46. Then, with temperatures peaking in the late afternoon, she returned to run the rest of the field ragged over the 8-lap distance. Again, only Volkmer was able to keep pace through the final stages of the race.

Contributing critical points to what would turn out to be the winning team total, Pinkie Schnayer (24) and Anna Stubbington (23) earned advancement in both the shot put and discus. Stubbington erupted in the former with a new personal best of 37 feet, 9.5 inches, which improves her 5th-all-time mark.

Quinn Ahearn (23) climbed aboard the all-time list with a 41.75 clocking in the 300 hurdles while Nelson picked up a 2nd school record on the day with a wind-aided 200m finish.
